Oprah Winfrey was in Iowa this past weekend helping to generate additional momentum for Barack Obama's U.S. presidential campaign.

In a recent NY Times article covering Oprah's support, a U.S. native from the state of Iowa in attendance at an Oprah/Obama rally professes: "I think Oprah is John the Baptist, leading the way for Obama to win."

John the Baptist is considered the forerunner and prophet who prepared the path for the Messiah's ascension.

I was fascinated by the Biblical comparison and the perspective of this Iowan voter.

For many, Barack Obama inspires feelings of hope, change and unity. As an African-American who has garnered such a vast and diverse following, Obama has in essence already made history. His rapid ascension from unfamiliarity is both remarkable and frightening. Remarkable because his presence on the political scene is a refreshing one that the public has begun to embrace. Frightening because his background and his character will surely incite resentment among the hate-mongering community that is still ever-present within American society.

During Oprah's first ever speech for a political candidate, she confesses: "I am not here to tell you what to think, I'm here to ask you to think."  She continues by revealing her personal conviction as to why she believes Barack Obama is the right person with the right vision to lead the United States.

"I believe that Barack Obama will bring statesmanship to the White House. I believe that he will lead with strength and conviction, with honor, with compassion and with an unyielding focus on what we all can do together to make this nation the future that we all deserve."

Oprah's influence on the campaign of Obama for President remains to fully manifest, but the power that she yields through the controlling interest of her media empire is remarkable. Regardless of the presidential outcome, Oprah's use of her daily "ministry" as it is unveiled on television, in magazines, on the radio and through books to influence the minds of the American public and to support Barack Obama is a historical occurrence.
