K'Naan: Hip-Hop's Newest Philosopher

"... my long term goal is to use whatever fame I get to help change the situation in my region...not to own a clothing line like some of my rap peers," K'Naan

Unique. Conscious. Powerful. Infectious. These words describe the poetic lyrics and inventive sound of underground hip-hop artist, K’naan. Born in Somalia, a country in the northeast region of Africa, K’Naan re-introduces to hip-hop culture a sense of depth and authenticity in his music. Growing up in a region immersed in civil war and conflict, K’naan challenges commercial rapper’s perceptions and portrayals of what is “hardcore.” Clearly, K’naan seeks to do more than just entertain when he performs. He is potentially an agent for social change - using his talent to positively impact the minds of youth who struggle to survive in a world full of constant strife. A skilled poet and mc, K’naan delivers original thought-provoking philosophy over an infectious African-inspired drumbeat and melody. His first full length album, The Dusty Foot Philosopher, will surely inspire a new generation of talent and a resurrection of hip-hop's conscious roots.
